Telecom TV Newsdesk week-ending 23 November 2007
Full report from the Mobile Asia Congress in Macau... The demise of mobile WiMAX...? Ambitious targets to bring fibre to the home.

Telecom TV - The Main Agenda: WiBro, WiMAX, Why Wireless? Back when "Wi" began, it was all about Wi-Fi, a technology that enabled the World to connect to the internet without the hassle of wires. But beyond this, it provided nothing new, distance from the router was limited to several metres and mobility from one Wi-Fi zone into another was never going to be seamless. Because of these factors, the 3G operators of the World slept well in their beds, Wi-Fi kept the people happy, but was no threat to established mobile network data revenues. The recent development of WiMAX and WiBro however, has the wireless world shaking in their boots. It combines Wi-Fi ease of use with the benefits of 3G and that is really stepping on some toes. The race for the future of wireless has now truly begun, but does it really matter who wins? Consumers will always see fixed-line as the infrastructure behind the web and any wireless solutions as a useful added extra. So having spent so much time and money on developing 21st Century Networks, why wireless?

Telecom TV - Mobile Broadband Growth
The wide-scale deployment of HSPA technology in 3G networks is finally enabling true mobile broadband performance.

Telecom TV - Iridium Redux (Marine Iridium, Iridium vs Inmarsat)
Despite a very chequered past, from grand satellite schemes to a descent into bankruptcy, Iridium has re-invented itself and its new CEO believes there are plenty of wireless opportunities still available to the satellite company.

Telecom TV - WiFi Security
With an increasing number of individuals and businesses relying on wireless networks, the security of devices and data becomes even more difficult and important.

Telecom TV - Convergence Truths. (What are people doing with Video and PC Computers and Laptops. They're multi-tasking in the Living Room while watching Plasma or Big Screen TV in the background. In other rooms many are using PC or Laptop as a primary Video Streaming or TV / Movie Device. How do mobile devices fit in. How does this all affect advertising on content.)
A new convergence study from legal firm Olswang reveals that 70 per cent of consumers surveyed have no interest in mobile TV, a far higher figure than operators and vendors would have us believe. People are more interested in viewing longer content and that will not fit in most mobile journies. People also have other means of viewing video content mobile such as DVD players. (I don't know how well they looked at the yacht marine market but then again they typically have Satellite TV to the Main Salon as well as to all of the cabins of owners, guests, and crews. Yachts are definately an interesting portion of the market where it comes to convergence of voice, data, and video technologies. Perhaps they are a bit under served or under-surveyed anyway. ASMT said that.)

Ouside Plant (OSP TV) OSP TV Interview With Emtelle - OSP TV Interview at OSP Expo 2007 - Air Blown Fiber - instead of doing a Fiber Splice, we do a Tube Splice. The distances you can get by Air Blown installation are approximately 2500ft to a mile. At speeds of 100 to 150 feet a minute. You can install almost 6000 feet of fiber in an hour. (For those visitors that don't do outside plant, Fiber Optic carries most of your Internet and Voice Telephone Signals these days in your providers network and in the network backbone systems. Fiber-to-the Home, Premises, Curb, and other initiatives are bringing fiber, along with higher bandwidths and speeds, closer to - if not exactly to your own network.)

The outside plant and infrastructure guys are the unsung heros of keeping this stuff operating under the most demanding conditions.

Ouside Plant (OSP TV) OSP TV Interview With QC Data - OSP TV Interview at OSP Expo 2007 - Outside Plant Design and Data Services. Engineering Support Services, Fiber to the Premise - Fiber to the Node design; anything that the outside plant engineer needs to support their operation.

Ouside Plant (OSP TV) OSP TV Interview With Grant Traill General Manager of AT&T Network Operations out of San Ramone. I started in this business when Touch Tone was the state-of-the-art, so for me watching video over three screens and seeing all that we believed come true over the course of the years is an amazing thing for me... and I'm just glad to be part of it.

And now for a funny parody on TELECOM. I thought this video was funny if viewed generically. It was really aimed at TELECOM Company New Zealand (NZ). "It's used confusion as its chief marketing tool. Telecom have tricked us and that's really F'd. This phone's costing me a fortune. And I can't get access to the Internet. Finally we're gonna get what we want. Because we're telling Telecom... We're leaving. Soooo, are you coming with us? (Were all going to call Alan Spicer Telecom and get the TRUTH.) If you are pissed off at Telecom, do something about it. Close your accounts and take your business somewhere else."
Ok people remember this is a parody.

Alan Spicer Telecom is interested in Outside Plant because we are also a provider of DSL, T1, T3, Metropolitan Ethernet, and other Communications and Internet Services for Homes and Businesses. Please see the section on our main page:
http://telecom.dyndns.biz for Land Based Services. Obviously we also do Marine Communications, however we don't want to leave out the home offices / business offices of our Marine and other prospective customers. Alan Spicer Telecom wants to be your one-stop-shop for Communications on Land and at Sea. There are definately a lot of things going on with Fiber Optic Transmission for Faster Speeds and Higher Bandwidth, which will be imporant for the Multimedia aspects of Communications such as Video. FTTx they call it because there are various levels of how close the fiber is to your premises. If you are not right on top of Fiber there are also other ways to bring that bandwidth into your location. Anyway, it is very interesting when we can start talking about providing 100 Megabits per Second and 1000 Megabits per Second (GigaBit) to a customers premises. That sure beats the current DSL, T1, and T3; for those that need it and can afford it. The pricing can be quite a bit less (per Mb/s) than the other methods of acquiring connectivity and bandwidth.

About: Telecom, a shortening of the word telecommunication. Telecommunication refers to communication over long distances. Telecommunication covers all forms of distance and/or conversion of the original communications, including radio, telegraphy, television, telephone, data communication and computer networking.

MARITIME TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Although telecommunications technology is improving quickly, people at sea do not have access to the same telecommunications infrastructure people ashore have. Mariners not only need to access international shore telephone and data public switched networks, but also, they need to be able to communicate with other ships of any size or nationality, to receive and send urgent maritime safety information, and to send or receive distress alerts in an emergency to or from rescue coordination centers ashore and nearby ships anywhere in the world. Unlike cellular telephones and land mobile radios used in the United States, maritime telecommunications systems must be internationally interoperable, even in United States coastal waters, where numerous foreign ships sail. Bringing new telecommunications technology to mariners can be difficult, since to be interoperable, the technology must be affordable, acceptable and available to most ships and maritime countries.
